Everything You Should Know About Cold Sores

Cold Sores, aka fever blisters or oral herpes, are a common viral infection. It is a group of tiny, painful blisters which can cause quite the annoyance for a lot of people!

So what causes them and what is the best course of treatment?

Cold sores arise from viral infections. Outbreaks can occur due to high stress, fatigue, sunlight and even hormonal changes when a woman is on her period. There is no cure for cold sores but you can help to naturally prevent and treat them through taking Lysine.

Lysine

Lysine is an amino acid which cant be produced in the body so we must consume it through our diet or oral supplement. Lysine is found in fish, meat and dairy. It is essential for human health, also aiding calcium absorption and collagen formation.
Research has shown that 1000mg-2000mg per day is advisable for prevention of cold sores and that 3000mg-4,000mg divided across the day is suitable for the treatment of the viral infection.
We recommend taking ethical brand, Viridian L-Lysine 500mg. We also stock Solgar L-Lysine 1000mg

Bio-Propolis

Propolis is one of nature's antiseptics, used by bees to reduce the growth of bacteria, viruses and moulds inside the hive. Propolis preparations have been shown to be effective in reducing healing time and intensity of pain in cold sores. It can also relieve symptoms even when applied after the tingle stage.

We highly recommend using A.Vogel's Bio-propolis which is an ointment made from Propolis.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Many people find using apple cider vinegar beneficial as a treatment because of its proposed ability to fight off bacteria, viruses, and other germs.

However, be careful as full-strength apple cider vinegar is too intense to use directly on a cold sore and could irritate your skin. Be sure to dilute it before using, and then apply only once or twice per day.

Most of the time, cold sores go away on their own within a couple of weeks. If your cold sore lingers beyond 2 weeks, it might be time to check with your healthcare professional.
