Why is Vitamin B12 so important?
Vitamin B12, also known as cobalamin, is an essential vitamin that your body needs but cannot produce on it's own. It plays a vital role in many aspects of our health. It may support bone health, red blood cell formation, energy levels, and mood. Eating a nutritious diet or taking a supplement can help ensure you’re getting the amount you need.
It’s found naturally in animal products, but also added to certain foods and available as an oral supplement or injection.
Vitamin B12 has many roles in your body. It supports the normal function of your nerve cells and is needed for red blood cell formation and DNA synthesis. (1)
For most adults, the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) is 2.4 micrograms (mcg), though it’s higher for people who are pregnant or breastfeeding. (2)
A B12 deficiency, also known as anaemia, is a condition where your body does not produce enough healthy red blood cells. The B12 vitamin is needed to create red blood cells, which transport oxygen to all parts of the human body.
Without a large enough quantity of red blood cells, your tissues and organs will not receive enough oxygen, which can make people extremely tired. So why is B12 so important for our diet?
1. May benefit your brain health
The vitamin may play a role in preventing brain atrophy, which is the loss of neurons in the brain and often associated with memory loss. (3)
One study in people with early-stage dementia showed that a combination of vitamin B12 and omega 3 fatty acid supplements slowed mental decline. (4)
2. May give you an energy boost
Vitamin B12 is involved in energy production in your body. Taking a supplement may improve your energy level, but only if you are deficient in this vitamin.
If you have a vegetarian or vegan diet or are experiencing the symptoms associated with B12 deficiency, we recommend that you consult a doctor.
2. May improve heart health
High blood levels of the amino acid homocysteine have been linked to an increased risk of heart disease. (5)
If you’re significantly deficient in vitamin B12, your homocysteine levels become elevated. (6)
Studies have shown that vitamin B12 helps decrease homocysteine levels, which may reduce your risk of heart disease.
